Even if my heart goes to the Rio de Janeiro bid, how will they manage the high rates of violence that exist in Rio? And there is the poverty: a third of Rio’s 6 million people live in slums (favelas). What will they do about the slums? Built walls to hide them?

I agree. Having been mugged in Rio, I would worry about security there. Tokyo is too crazy and small, and Madrid is corrupt. Chicago is Capone and Daley and Lake Michigan, and Blues Brothers and the Cubs. Who can possibly resist?

I agree with the post above. I live in Brazil and I know what is going on here... this is for self promotion of Lula… make no mistake about it. Rio is a dangerous city. Brazilian Forces would have to be called to provide security. Not to mention we'd have to pay the debts forever... it happened with the Pan American Games in 2007, it will happen again. And besides, Chicago and Madrid would be the best options for IOC to choose. Excellent cities with the infrastructure needed to host an event such as the Olympic Games.

No worries! The Pan Am games come off with hardly any violence, Security will be BEEFED up!

Chicago. No need to think twice

I wish Chicao to host the 2016 Olympic Games for the sake of President Barak obama fame. It adds some lad to his political views.

Chicago is the best choice.

John   October 2nd, 2009 2:45 pm ET

Madrid of course.
Along with the fact that they had lots of success these times in sport. (football, basketball, formula 1, tennis etc...) they have the higher percentage of the population supporting the Olympic games, and games are about people. Don't forget that they are the only important capital in Europe who hasn't organized the Olympic games...

As much as I love President Obama, I wonder how thousands of interested people to attend the olympic games will be able to get their visas, given the long duration and taugh conditionalities there are now for obtaining one. So, I hope , for the sake of Olympics, either another city gets the game, or there will be radical changes for entering to US at that time .
