Hello there, I-Deskers...

First, let's talk about the presenter. Isha will, of course, present the early edition; and, Michael Holmes returns for Day-2 of his I-Desk debut, in the later edition. Hala returns on Wednesday.

Alright, down to business!

The big story today comes out of Britain, where for the first time in more than 300 YEARS, the speaker of the House of Commons has been forced to resign. Speaker Michael Martin was caught up in an expense scandal, which had several MPs calling for his resignation. Less than 24 hours after that debate in Parliament, Mr. Martin announced that he would quit. So, what now? Our political contributor and expert on UK politics, Robin Oakley, is working this story and giving his unique perspective. And, Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to comment on Mr. Martin's decision, during the early edition.

Also at the I-Desk... Sri Lanka is celebrating the apparent end to the war, at least according to the government. But, do you think it's really over? Check out our I-Desk Online Poll below, and cast your vote.

And... we're also covering the 120th birthday of the Eiffel Tower, as well as the revealing of the so-called "Missing Link."

See you at the I-Desk!!!

Once you are found wanting, the ONLY ideal thing to do is to resign and be interrogated.

Thomas Cunningham   May 19th, 2009 7:10 pm ET

I am glad Speaker Martin has resigned. he is a scapegoat. I dont know how other countries can respect our politicians when they don't have a fully open system themself. I prefer the way the Scottish parliament publishes EVERYTHING on expenses, including on the web. Speaker Martin did try and stop this in the UK parliament.

chukito   May 19th, 2009 7:19 pm ET

well..i must say..for a country that stands out in war against corruption..it is really shameful that, a thing like this would occur..talk about wasteful use of the taxpayer's money. Resignation aint enough..justice should prevail

Mick   May 19th, 2009 7:20 pm ET

The MP's who abused their positions and made dubious claims should be investigated by the police. If it was a working class person they would probably be charged with deception- double standards once again. The British public are fed up with this lack of integrity- we need an election.

Paulo Libanio   May 19th, 2009 7:20 pm ET

Here in Brazil, we are facing similar problems with our Parliament. Senators and deputies were caught in big scandal after it was discovered that they were using public funds to buy airplane tickets for their relatives. Can you believe it?

miriam   May 19th, 2009 7:43 pm ET

In response to Michael Holmes' discussion with Reza Saya.

Neither the Iranians nor the larger Moslem world care about the Palestinians and have only made a case for them because it's a way of delegitimizing Israel's existance. If they did truely care about them, they would not have left them in camps for the last 61 years without granting them citizenship or simple rights, privileges Israel allowed her Arab residents since 1948.

When Ahmadinijhad rants and raves about the destruction of the Zionist entity, Israel has the right to question how he intends to achieve those aims. Too often in Jewish history have the threats of deranged leaders been dismissed as rhetoric, only to have resulted in disaster.

It is not inconceivable that the Moslem world under the leadership of Iran but with the assistance of allies such as Hizbollah, Hamas etc would once again use the Palestinian people as unfortunate pawns in the ultimate aim of Israel's destruction and the removal of Jews from the lands deemed only for Moslem rule, ie India to Spain.

Your anti-Israel slant is shameful. Just because the American administration has changed its approach, every other world democracy cannot be expected to immediately change and toe the line of the US just because the new administration is perceived as having changed track to one that is more favourable to left-wing journalists.

Mpazi Siwale   May 19th, 2009 9:42 pm ET

I have been following the story on the scandal in England for sometime.
And every time I watch the story develop I can't help but think about the M.P.s in my country (Zambia) who would go as far as demand wage increases and absolutely ridiculous "allowances"!
These are probably the most well-off people in the country robbing the tax-payers money right under our noses, while the rest of the nation slips further and further into poverty!!
For what?? More and more inadequate leadership!!
Moreover, they did this all while our Head Of State was on his death bed in France!!
I can understand how the British public must be feeling....
But the truth is, the people of most African nations have things far worse!

Bavani   May 20th, 2009 12:30 pm ET

Sri Lankan army still killing, abducting, raping, and torching inside the camps and outside is an open prison. Tanils do not have freedom. They killed 100,000 innocent civillians in the name of war on terror since january 09. Sri Lanka imprisoned innocent 250000 tamils. There were 165000 civilians in the so called 'no fire zone'. They say only 25000 people came out. What happen to the rest. They just bomped and killed them. Now they are burning their bodies to erase the evidence against war crimes. They arrested 3 doctors who reported about number of people were killed by constant bombing and shelling one only hospital in the conflict area by Sri Lankan army. Why are they keeping the doctors? Are they going to kill them to erase the evidence? UN failed to stop to the war to protect the civilians. Tamils have no freedom under sinhala government since 1948 independence. Tamils have been denied education, jobs and freedom under the sinhala government. SL government killed thousands in 1958,1961,1972,1977,1983 riots. They abduct young men, women and kill them without trace. They killed 100,000 or more until 2009. Since January 2009 100,000. UN say 7000 killed since January 09. Sri Lankan gov says there are 126000 in the IDP camps. Earlier they said 190000. What happend to the rest? Where is the 165000 who were with LTTE? There will be no peace until tamils achieve a separate state or even country. History tells Eelam was a tamil nation and tamils are origin native since 3000 BC and island was joined with India as one continent.

Lyn   May 20th, 2009 12:32 pm ET

The genocide carried out on vulnerable unharmed people including infants, young mothers and young people and elderly is going to have longlasting unforgettable scars in many of the minds and hearts of the Tamil people all over the world. We will not such injustice get away even if the enemy thinks that the evidence can be erased by burning the bodies and bombing people with white phosphorous and other chemical warfare weapons. Even if the murderers think the poison gases have snuffed out the fighters we have been awakened to another new fight for justice for the RIGHTS OF THE ETHNIC TAMILS OF TAMILELAM.

Kas Shivas   May 20th, 2009 12:33 pm ET

Conventional war may be over but war never brings peace. What this war has done is to give a new lease of life to the conflict. Hatred sown by the government in the hearts of young Tamil youth is much greater than even that of the anti Tamil pogrom in Colomo. War without a political solution means nothing. Therfore in reality the 'war' is not really over. The Sri Lankan government with its known worst Human Rights record will now start a witch hunt under the guise of eradicating the remnants of LTTE and kill more Tamils.

k.sivam   May 20th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

The war in Srilanka will never be over until there is a solution for the tamil minority.
The srilankana government still killing innocent tamil civilians.

Kas Shivas   May 20th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

The conventional war may be over but whars can never bring peace. What this war under the guise of war on terror has really done is to give a new lease of life to the national problem. The government has sown more hatred in the minds of Tamil youths now than the anti Tamil pogrom of 1983. Winning over territories is not winning over the hearts of the people. With its known bad human rights record and the habit of crushing any dissent now the government will now start a witch hunt of Tamils saying that it is wiping off the remnants of ltte. In the absence of direction and statesmanship in reality this war will only continue.

Ramiya   May 20th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

srilankan government is still killing tamil people.

Susheela Suguness   May 20th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

The Question should be "Is the problem for Tamils in Sri Lanka over?" "Is innocent tamils are still dying in Sri Lanka?" Answer is "YES", "yes" and "yes"

Why the media is covering more about the victory by the Sri Lanakan Govt., but not about the civilians who are dying unattended, no food, no medicines etc?

Susheela Suguness   May 20th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

Oh I meant to say "NO" for the question "Is the problem for tamils in Sri Lanka over?" Please correct that mistake.

Hi World,

Its is very simple logic. Here war is not against the terrorism. Its against tamil thats why Sri Lanka is doing bad things under the carpet. Its is not a war in first place. Just killing tamils in legal way thats why they cannot allow media or indipendant observers.

SRI LANKA IS CELEBRATING GENOCIDE OF TAMILS!!!! Peace can never be attained in a country with STATE TERRORISM! As long as the government of Sri Lanka continues massacres, starvation, arrests, disappearances, tortures, rapes of Tamils, this tiny island's war is far from over! US needs to do immediate HUMANITARIAN intervention and charge the Rajapaksa regime with WAR CRIMES and bring REAL PEACE the Tamils have waited decades for!!

Prabakar   May 20th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

Noting that the slow genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka accelerated to more than 10,000 killed in the last few months, far exceeding the horrors of Srebrenica, Professor Boyle in conversation with Los Angeles KPFK radio host, Michael Slate, Tuesday, accused Sri Lanka Government of bulldozing and destroying evidence of massacres in the Safety Zone while preventing access to the Red Cross and UN agencies. Boyle added that the United States Government with spy satellites would be knowing exactly what Sri Lanka's actions are in the Safe Zone, and stand implicated along with UK, France, and India in allowing the genocide to happen

Protecting the Tamil speaking people of this country is my responsibility. That is my duty. All the people of this country should live in safety without fear and suspicion. All should live with equal rights. That is my aim. Let us all get together and build up this nation", said H.E the President and Commander-in- Chief, Mahinda Rajapaksa delivering the opening address at the historic Parliamentary fourth session today

Many posters tell that Sri lankan government kills ""CIVILIANS"" but LTTE held civilians as HUMAN SHIELDS and killed many CIVILIANS when they tried to flee from LTTE. Many Dollar collectors in US and Canada still fooling the TAMIL people by saying the LTTE leader is alive or LTTE will come back. These pro-LTTE people said nothing about the WOUNDED or DEAD Tamil Tigers. Where are they? pro-LTTE websites and Tamil News papers once claimed that LTTE had 15,000 soldiers to fight government forces. What happened to them? Today I heard FUND collection in the name of LTTE still going on in Canada.

The war just started on Saturday, 5/16/2009. Do you know why I say that, because SL government said they won the war on terrorism? Sri Lankan foolish government think Tamil tigers and Tamil civilians are deferent. The truth is who born in a Tamil family in EELAM all are TIGERS. Every Tamils who live on around the globe are Tigers. I have Son and I will raise him up as a Tiger, because I believe one day we will have our own nation called EELAM.
SL Fools (President and his team) saying that they successfully killed the Tamil Leader Prabaharan, that’s not the truth. Because NO ONE CAN KILL PRABAHARAN until God’s time come to pass on his life. SL foolish government will regret very soon, why they announced a victory over Tamil TIGERS. From now on they can’t kill any Tamil civilian evidently because according their own statements there are no more Tiger in that country.
Very soon EELAM will be established by the support of the all nations (USA, UN, etc

THIRU   May 20th, 2009 8:49 pm ET

I think war is not over. The reason is there is no political solution for tamil speaking people.

Walt   May 21st, 2009 12:31 am ET

As a war victum, i would say no.. and never, until the Tamil's rights addressed.

Pearl Thevanayagam   May 21st, 2009 12:35 am ET

The war has just begun. Tamils are the new Palestinians. The government including Tamil politicians are celebrating not the end of terrorism but the annihilation of 7,000 -10,000 hapless civilians since January 2009 whose only crime was to have been in the war zone. Remember, history shows it was never the Sinhalese who were the enemies of Tamils but Tamils themselves.
Starting from the defection of the two midde class senators, Sirs P. Arunachalam and Ramanathan in the then British governance who when asked on independence in 1948 following India's bloody struggle to chase away the British Raj whether Tamils want a united Sri Lanka or they should separate the island and give autonomy to Tamils they said an emphatic 'No@. All because they held portfolio in the Senate.
The Federal Party stalwarts also ignored the common Tamils who toiled as farmers and fishermen but who lived dignified lives not being subjugated either to the British or the Sinhalese.
Thanks to western interest Tamils are being annihilated. But Tamil diaspora would be a force to reckon with. The third generation Tamils are not silent witnesses. They are mobilisng and they will stop at nothing to claim their motherland. This may take many years or even decades. We are going nowhere until we gain our rightful place in our homeland Sri Lanka.
