I don't think so. Till now this Pope didn't show at all that he wants to change things in the world for the better. In Africa he told school classes filled with HIV-infected children that condoms were not the solution. I don't think it's realistic to expect any serious step forward from someone he who is capable of saying such things. Till now the only steps this Pope has taken were backwards!

There are some mitigating meat product issues yet to be resolved between the religions.,

San Francisco, Ca/Germany

Brister Bate   May 8th, 2009 4:35 pm ET

I had to vote "YES", for being optimistic.

The Poll seems to refer to improving relations between the "humans behind the faiths", not reconciling their beliefs in One Faith.

There certainly are incompatibilities between the "faiths", but at the end it is always the same one God that will have the last word, despite what every single group may add or subtract in their systems.

Therefore, on a diplomatic and human level, there should be a good chance of success for a better world.

I wish Pope Benedict my very best.

BB, Oslo, Norway.

Jacob   May 8th, 2009 6:54 pm ET

I voted 'Yes'. I'm hopeful that the effort put in by the Pope will ease the feelings between the Church and the other religions.

John: I'd have to disagree. Asking people to abstain is actually asking them to move above their baser instincts. If anything, wouldn't that be a step forward?
As for 'realistic', it would be the people's (e.g., those in Africa) choice, ultimately; the Holy Father only offering what he believes is the right choice. Saying otherwise would contradict the teachings of the Church regarding the matter. That and promoting condoms would probably promote promiscuity, as well...which I don't think will help with the STD/HIV-AIDS situation.

SensibleAli   May 11th, 2009 5:44 pm ET

Too much mentioning of him being a German. It's a stigma disallowing him to express his opinion freely. Mouth cuffing.

Abdul Razzak   May 12th, 2009 5:37 am ET

Very Strange and hypocritical relationship I guess this is! How a pope who is believing that a nation killed their God or Son of God could go to the same nation and try to build up relationship? One nation think that 13 is lucky other says it is unlucky. Joining with Contradictions is like trying to make a knot between two seeds.

I find it necessary and voted 'yes' on the ground that it is important at this point as it is going to affect the future of Sri Lanka as a whole. A defeat will not solve the problem but will create frustration, deep down anger and revenging needs dor one party and mislead the winning party. We could see both parties deny the rights and damage the livesof their own representing communities and forgotten their visions.

An interference from international community is healthy and needy at this time not only to overcome the situation but to avoid global effects which will one or the other way may affect everyone's living.

Anura   May 12th, 2009 10:42 am ET

No, we never want any international invention to come to Sri Lanka.

We, as human beings, we need our freedom in our country. Also, we need to take our own decision within our country's problems.

LTTE are TERRORISTS & NOT CIVILIANS OR INNOCENT PEOPLE.

LTTE are killing their own people (Tamils)

LTTE are cruel, wicked people, who do not hv heart or mind. They are just DEVILS.

M.SATHIAMOORTHY   May 12th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

How come the international community watching and doing nothing to stop this genocide war at tamils in Srilanka

Three brothers in power in Srilanka should be brought to the international courts and punished

It is shame to see these killing in a civilised world at 21st centuary

Roja Rani   May 12th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

if international community not intervence in srilanka , srilankan government will not stop the killing tamils

Ranjit Jayewardene   May 12th, 2009 12:32 pm ET

No other country, institution or leader will share our fate. Therefore we alone must shape that fate, decide our own destiny. This is our country, our borders, our land, our peoples, our future. No one must be allowed to dictate to us or pressurize us. We must go ahead and do what we have to do to end our 30 years war in a manner that it cannot be easily re-started. This means eliminating the Tigers and following up a decisive victory with a generous and wise humanitarian and political policy.

Nishantha Bogahawattage   May 12th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

We as Sri Lankans were living together with loving to each other but these developed countries need to survive themselves that's why they need to help to feed these terrorishm.

They need to keep these developing countries with the problems forever, that's their business therfore they have choosen these innocent tameelians to achieve their target & strategy,

Unfortunately these our friends has not been realised this hidden truth, we must work together to answer these cunning developed countries that they can't do seperate us and we can do sweepout them to live together.

Dear CNN,
please try to realise we Sinhaleese & Tameelian all are relations of the Sri Lanka

I am suprised that lot of killing happening in northern Srilanka and the international community is just looking. More surprised as there are no meddia in the area and every body allowing the killing to take place not to reported at all from inside. The big organisation like yours are not taking any active steps to change this situation. the killings are not withnessed at all

O YE OF LITTLE FAITH?

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

(For after all these things do the Gentiles [heathen] seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the evil thereof. (Matthew 6:31-34)

S. Fernando   May 12th, 2009 8:32 pm ET

I do not think religions will solve any of our problems on this earth. Most of the wars are due to economic reasons fueled by religions casts or creed. If every body has a roof above , clothes to wear and food to feed tendency for wars will diminish. It is very evident that the population on this earth getting out of control especially in third world where majority of world problems originate. Polititians, all over the world dare not touch or criticize religions or birth controlling as these are very sensitive issues to ignorant masses. There should be world panel consist of educated people who can foresee the future and convince all stooges mislead by religions. Most of these religions are forced on to people from their birth by their parents, priest, mullahs, rabaii or monks. If yoyu believe in any god you would expect him to come and save his children from this mess. I can assure you that will be a long wait that will never materialize.

John   May 13th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Jacob: Sorry now i have to disagree. The Pope is someone with a whole lot of influence on different choices they make, certainly in the large parts of Catholic Africa. Asking people to abstain, is asking them to fight maybe even the first instinct they've got. Of course it would help, but i don't think it is an option. Better would be to tell people to use condoms as long as they wont abstain, and then later on try to make clear that monogamy is a good thing, which could be the solution also. But by this teaching to abstain, every day during 'class' people get infected. If the Pope would tell them to use condoms he is free to tell them also that its not meant to be that way. But to disagree with using condoms means that every 'mistake' a person makes is punished at the end with the dead penalty!

Nazareth, Israel – May 14th, 2009:

In his homily, Benedict speaking of the tensions that have harmed interfaith relations, said:

"I urge people of goodwill in both communities to repair the damage that has been done, and in fidelity to our common belief in one God, the Father of the human family, to work to build bridges and find the way to a peaceful coexistence."

"Let everyone reject the destructive power of hatred and prejudice, which kills men's souls before it kills their bodies."
___________
S. Fernardo: For the record: It is implicit in the word Faith to believe in God and what He has said and says to His people throughout the ages. Adding "personal atheistical opinions", especially out of the poll's context, won't change an iota in the Eternal Truth the believers believe. Also it makes your "assurance" groundless and worthless!
